ST. MAARTEN: Human Rights to Be Discussed in Town Hall Meetings

The chairperson of the Netherlands Institute for Human Rights is scheduled to visit St. Maarten to conduct two town hall meetings there.  Adriana Van Dooijeweert is expected to discuss why human rights are important in the relationship between people and the government. According to van Dooijeweert, “governments have a lot of power.  Human rights exist to protect citizens from abuse by the government’s powers. Countries have agreed to guarantee these rights for all citizens so that everyone can live in human dignity.”
