KENYA: Refugees Study Human Rights

Europe Now, the journal of the Council of European Studies, reports on a program for teaching university courses, including “Introduction to Human Rights” in refugee camps in Kenya.  The courses are led by InZone, an academic center of the University of Geneva. According to the article, “The [on line] ‘Introduction to Human Rights’ course is followed each year by thousands of students around the world, with the support of an online forum where students can send their questions to a teaching assistant located at the University of Geneva.”  However, offering the class in refugee camps presents some unusual challenges. The Learning Hub is in a shipping container and internet access is not always available. Additionally, transportation to the hub is difficult for most students, and especially so for females. Nevertheless students press on and twenty sat for their oral examination in human rights.
