FLORIDA: Human Rights Advocates Learn From Florida Schools

A group of human rights activists from Central and South America recently completed a tour of five American cities on a trip sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Educational and Cultural Affairs department. According to wjct.org the group was hosted by GlobalJax, a North Florida group providing opportunities for engagement with established and emerging world leaders. The group visited an elementary school in the Duval County Public Schools District. Leyzer Chiquin, a Guatemalan film producer who works for Casa de la Cinematografía Maya, an organization making films and documentaries focusing on human rights issues, was quoted as saying, “in my country in Guatemala right now the school system is incredibly rigid and there’s really no respect for the cultural diversity that’s represented in the country.”
