THE GAMBIA: Human Rights Advocacy Celebrates 30 Years

African Centre for Democracy and Human Rights Studies (ACDHRS) celebrated its 30 years anniversary recently.  The Centre is a non-profit regional human rights NGO based in The Gambia established in 1989 by an Act of Parliament.  According to reporting in thepoint.gm  “ACDHRS seeks to  … promote and ensure through teaching, education and publication, respect for the rights and freedoms contained in the present Charter and to ensure these freedoms and rights.”  A speaker at the event, Chief Justice Hassan B. Jallow, a former prosecutor of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, admonished that the ACDHRS “must put in efforts on raising public awareness in the field of human rights to strengthen civil society capacity … .”
